Your first step to resolving any issue on your scanner is to use the Scanner Utility Tool to diagnose and fix any problems within the printer and your system. There are two different tools, one for systems running on Windows, and the other for Mac.

Windows (HP Print & Scan Doctor)

  • Go to – https://support.hp.com/us-en/help/printscandoctor-scanning-problems#downloadModal
  • Download the HP Print and Scan Doctor for Windows.
  • Runn & install the setup (HPPSdr.exe).
  • Run the Software.
  • Click Start.
  • Choose your printer from the list.
  • If your printer is not listed, then
    • Turn your printer off & on.
    • Click on Retry.
    • If it still doesn’t connect, follow the instructions given in the software.
  • The software will scan your device for any problem.
  • Once the issue is detected, click Fix Scanning.

Mac (HP Smart App)

  • Click on – https://apps.apple.com/us/app/hp-smart/id1474276998
  • Download the HP Smart App.
  • Make sure your system & Printer are inside the range of your WiFi router.
  • If your system is connected to the internet via an Ethernet cable, remove it and connect using your WiFi.
  • Turn on your system’s Bluetooth to connect to your scanner.
  • Install the app.
  • Run the HP Smart App.
  • If this app is running on your system for the first time, then
    • Sign in/up to an HP account.
    • Click Add Printer/Scanner or + sign.
    • Select your scanner/printer.
    • Complete the setup.
  • Click on Diagnose & Fix.
  • Select your scanner/printer (top menu bar).

Error in Connection – The most usual reason for your device not working is that there is a problem with the connection between the scanner – system or the system – network.

  • Scanner – System
    • If your scanner is connected via a USB Cable.
      • Inspect the cable for any tears or damage.
      • Inspect the connectors for any lint, dust, or damage that might hinder the connection.
    • If your scanner is connected via Bluetooth
      • Check your Bluetooth setting and see if there is a problem with the connection
      • Troubleshoot the scanner connection from the Bluetooth Setting.
      • Remove your scanner from the paired device list, and pair it again.
  • System – Network
    • Check your ethernet cable for any damage.
    • Check whether your system is connected to the internet network or not.
    • Troubleshoot the connection in case it is not.

Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) Services Disabled – WIA is a software that allows your scanning/printing devices to use graphic software, to perform their normal functioning. To use your scanner, these services must be enabled.

  • Open Run, on your system.
  • Enter services.msc.
  • Click OK.
  • In the services window, scroll down and locate Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).
  • Double-click on it.
  • In the Pop-Up menu.
    • Set the Startup Type to Automatic.
    • Check if the Service Status is Running.
      • If it is, then, Click Stop.
      • Then click Start, to restart it.
    • Click on Apply & OK.
  • Scroll to find the rest of the services, that are
    • Remote Procedure Call RPC
    • DCOM Server Process Launcher
    • RPC Endpoint Mapper
    • Shell Hardware Detection
  • Double-Click on them.
  • Check if the Startup Type & Service Status are set to Automatic & Running as you did for WIA.
  • Save the setting.
  • Restart your system, and check if the scanner is working.

Outdated/Corrupted Scanner Driver –Drivers are responsible for smooth data communication between your system and the devices connected to them, thus, if there is an issue with the driver, it can lead to improper functioning of your scanner.

  • Go to – https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/printers
  • Type in your scanner name & model, in the search field.
  • Click on Submit.
  • Look for your desired/latest drivers.
  • Click on Download, and download all the drivers.
  • Run the driver setup.
  • Install the driver, by following the instructions in the setup.
  • Restart your system.
  • Check if the scanner is working.

Hardware Error – An issue within your scanner may lead it to stop functioning, to find out and resolve this issue-

  • Click on the Windows Search Bar.
  • Type in cmd.
  • Click on Run as Administrator, below Command Prompt.
  • In the command prompt, type – msdt.exe -id DeviceDiagnostic
  • Press Enter.
  • A window by the name of Hardware & Devices will open up.
  • Click Next.
  • Follow the instructions to scan for and fix any issues that are found.

Error in System Files – Corrupted/damaged files in your system can also be a cause for your scanner not working, this can be solved through the System Files Checker, it is a windows built-in application, that can scan through all your systems files, find any issue and solve it, to use it-

  • Click on the Windows Search Bar.
  • Type in cmd.
  • Click on Run as Administrator, below the command Prompt icon.
  • Type sfc /scannow, in the command prompt.
  • Press Enter.
  • Wait for the verification process to reach 100% completion.
  • In the command prompt, type Exit, and press Enter.
  • Restart your system and check if the scanner is working.
